Budoni (Budune in sardinian logudorese, Buduni in gallurese) is an Italian town of 5,049 inhabitants in the province of Olbia-Tempio in Sardinia.
Geographical location and territory
The municipality of Budoni borders to the north with the municipality of San Teodoro, to the west with the municipality of Torpè and to the south with the municipality of Posada. Originally composed of 22 fractions some are now gone. The current ones areTanaunella, the most populous, S'Iscala, Muriscuvò, Limpiddu, Solità, San Gavino, San Lorenzo, Tamarispa, San Pietro, Lutturai, Strugas, Maiorca, Berruiles, San Silvestro, Malamurì, Birgalavò, Luttuni, Agrustos, Ottiolu, Stazzu Bruiatu, Lu Linnalvu, and Ludduì.
From the Nuraghic period to the Middle Ages
The Nuragic civilization has left some nuraghe and domus de janas in the territory of Budoni, which testify to the frequentation of these areas already in the Neolithic age (about 4000 BC). In Roman times not far from the current center stood the port of Augustus Populus, now known as Agrustos, a village near the main nucleus of the country. In judicial age (1000 - 1420 approx.) The Budoni area belonged to the Giudicato di Gallura (curatoria of Posada), then passed under the Pisan dominion. In the Liber fondachi - register of assets held on the island by the city of Pisa - the villa of Sortinissa and that of Tamarispa are remembered as tributaries of the Pisan tax authorities.
Recent centuries
Detaching itself from the municipality of Posada, in 1959 the small town became an autonomous municipality together with San Teodoro, starting a new chapter in its history.
Language and dialect
Budoni is a bilingual municipality, in which both the gallurese and the logudorese are spoken, as it represents the border between the two linguistic domains. The logudorese language is, however, majority and is spoken by about 60% of its inhabitants.
Economy
Today almost totally reconverted to seaside tourism, it was, in the past, entirely based on breeding and agriculture. The latter, however, still represents an important sector of the its economy.
Sport
The main football club in the village is Budoni Calcio playing Pro in the D series.
Other sports played in Budoni, in addition to football, minibasket and basketball are: handball, shooting, judo, karting, which take place in various championships, amateur or not, in the kartdrome of Agrustos.
Beach rugby tournaments are held during the summer.
